Like Any Other Kid provides a rare glimpse into the intimate relationships between incarcerated youth and staff in three secure facilities across the country. Based on the Missouri approach, where relationships, structure and limits are used instead of punishment, the programs in these facilities guide and teach youth how to take responsibility for themselves. Through scenes of conflict, vulnerability, reflection, commitment and joy, the youth transform before our eyes. Like Any Other Kid shows us the great potential of these young people if we let them be just that: like any other kid.

Like Any Other Kid has screened at film festivals, detention facilities, educational institutions, community organizations and for judges, facility staff and policymakers across the nation. Audience response has been overwhelmingly receptive. This event provides many opportunities for discussion among people involved in the justice system, including detention facility personnel, mental health workers, social workers, lawyers, judges, and anyone interested in youth development and the importance of strong relationships to influence change.

Panel:

Victoria Mills, MSW, Cert. Psya., Director/Producer, is an award-winning documentary filmmaker and full-time, practicing psychoanalyst in New York City. Previous film directing credits include Mothers and Daughters: Mirrors That Bind and Hidden Battles, both of which travelled the international festival circuit and had successful impact initiatives with women and girls and veterans and peace organizations respectively. As an analyst with 30 years’ experience, Victoria has worked extensively with adolescents, people of different cultures, and those who have experienced trauma. She is a training analyst, teacher, lecturer, and member of the International Psychoanalytic Association, the Institute for Psychoanalytic Training and Research. and National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis. In conjunction with her films, Ms. Mills leads workshops with universities, national organizations, and grass-roots community groups.

Stephen Soldz, PhD, Cert. Psya. is a psychologist, psychoanalyst, social activist and researcher in Boston. He has been in the forefront of efforts to withdraw psychologists from aiding abusive interrogations. In addition to his productive psychological and public health research career, Dr. Soldz has published numerous professional articles, book chapters, and popular articles on the roles of psychologists in military and intelligence operations, and the role of psychology and psychoanalysis in understanding social phenomena. He is a member of the Board of the National Association for the advancement of Psychoanalysis (NAAP), the Board of APA Division 39 (Psychoanalysis), a representative to the American Psychological Association Council of Representatives, an Adviser to Physicians for Human Rights and a past president of Psychologists for Social Responsibility. With Steven Reisner he shared the 2016 NAAP Vision Award and the 2017 Division 39 Leadership Award. Dr. Soldz was a consultant on several Guantánamo legal cases.
